Bill Conallen

Philadelphia Corporation for Aging’s (PCA) 9th annual Senior Strut was spotlighted on 6abc’s Art of Aging segment, a news series that connects adults with various resources throughout the region. The article highlighted the event along Kelly Drive, encouraging older adults to engage in a one-mile walk led by the Mummers. Presented by PA Health & Wellness, the walk aimed to promote fun, health, and wellness among older adults. Participants, coming from various parts of the city, walked for several reasons, including a love for walking, addressing mobility issues, and celebrating weight loss achievements.

High school friends Priscilla Durham and Elizabeth Bishop, both members of the Martin Luther King Older Adult Center, joined the event. Bishop, who had lost 130 pounds and aimed to reduce diabetes medication, emphasized the significance of health and wellness. The event featured a DJ to energize participants, and the walk concluded with lunch at the Cosmic Café and health-related exhibitors at Lloyd Hall. PCA President and CEO, Dr. Najja R. Orr, also delivered remarks reflecting on the agency’s 50th anniversary with trivia and prizes.

With 32 health vendors providing valuable information, the Senior Strut attracted 450 participants who left feeling accomplished and rejuvenated. The event aligns with the PCA’s mission to keep older Philadelphians engaged, connected to the community, and involved in health and wellness activities. Participants expressed exhilaration and satisfaction, emphasizing that despite their age, there are opportunities to revitalize and enjoy life.
