Holiday tips for people living with dementia & caregivers

Dementia Friendly PA shared the following tips to make the holidays more enjoyable for people living with dementia, their families, and caregivers. Simplifying celebrations, planning, and setting boundaries can help minimize stress for family members and create a pleasant holiday experience for all, including the person living with dementia.

  • Create a safe, calm space: Tone down decorations. Avoid safety hazards. Play music.
  • Adapt holiday activities: Prepare together. Avoid disruptions. Provide a quiet space. Plan meaningful activities. Keep outings brief.
  • Celebrate at a care facility: Minimize visitor traffic. Gather in a familiar setting.
  • Prepare holiday visitors: Provide an update on the person’s condition/well-being. Offer communications tips. Suggest activities.
