PCA’s second annual “Carousel of Talent,” showcasing the creativity of older adults across Philadelphia’s senior centers, was recently featured on 6abc’s Art of Aging segment — a news series that connects older adults with community resources. The event featured eight acts representing six senior centers and spanned a broad range of disciplines, from poetry and dance to choir and instrumental performances.
Michael Drzik, Special Events Manager at Philadelphia Corporation for Aging, emphasized the talent show’s unique focus. “It’s an opportunity for our older adults to share their talents and passions,” said Drzik. “Every act is a celebration of creativity.”
Renay Cook of the Philadelphia Senior Center on the Avenue of the Arts captivated the crowd with two original poems, including “Who Really Cares?” Cook, who has been writing poetry since she was 12, explained, “Writing makes me feel good — it’s something that keeps me going.”
Alice Flamer returned for a second year to sing a heartfelt duet of “You’ve Got a Friend,” while dancers from On Lok House and Norris Square Senior Center brought energy and movement to the stage. The Southwest Senior Center Choir and Lutheran Settlement House Singers also performed crowd-pleasing pieces like “On the Way to Cape May,” celebrating Philadelphia’s cultural diversity.
Julie Nelson, Center Manager at the Philadelphia Senior Center on the Avenue of the Arts, noted the impact of this event. “It highlights that our seniors can still live out their dreams,” she said. “And they make new friends along the way.”
Lois M. Kukcinovich of Northern Living Center, who performed a stirring rendition of “Victory Is Mine,” shared that participating brings her joy and inner peace. “I’m so thankful to be celebrating my 95th birthday this September,” she added.
The event is also a reminder of the power of creative expression at every stage of life. “It’s so exciting to see that life remains vibrant,” said Nelson. “Creative pursuits continue — and they only get better.”
