WATCH: On Lok Senior Center Supports Asian American Older Adults in Chinatown
PCA supported On Lok Senior Center was recently featured on 6abc’s Art of Aging, highlighting the center’s vibrant programs and welcoming community for older adults in Chinatown. The segment showcased how On Lok supports its largely Chinese American membership through culturally tailored activities and services.
“We provide activity and means for people to come together,” said Center Director Jennifer Wang.
Wang, who speaks both Cantonese and Mandarin, helps members feel at home by leading programs in their native languages and offering support with social services. On Lok also provides daily congregate meals, giving participants a chance to connect over shared food and conversation.
“They can talk to each other, make friends,” Wang explained.
Esther Lee, PCA’s Assistant Director of Community Engagement, emphasized On Lok’s mission: “They have wonderful programming and services at the center. This community really honors and respects our elders.”
From traditional Chinese dance to karaoke and choir, the center celebrates cultural heritage while fostering connection. Volunteer music teacher Victor Zhao, who leads the choir, says the group has grown over time and brings joy to its members. “They’re very happy,” said Zhao. “This lesson is very important.”
Longtime participant Anna Lee agrees. “I sing and I like it here,” she said. “I’ve been a member almost 35 years.”
Wang describes On Lok as more than a senior center—it’s a place where people feel they belong. “We are a big family,” she said.
