Exploring challenges and solutions in supporting older adults who self-neglect
In recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, PCA hosted a compelling panel focused on the often-overlooked issue of adults who self-neglect. Held at PCA’s headquarters at 642 N. Broad Street, the event convened professionals across disciplines to explore the challenges and solutions in identifying and supporting older adults who may be at risk.
Moderated by Tamikia Morris, PCA’s Director of Older Adult Protective Services, the event featured an expert panel that included:
- Dr. Megan M. Moore, Psy.D., ABPP, Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Board Certified in Rehabilitation Psychology
- Benjamin McKeena, Senior Deputy Attorney General, PA Office of Attorney General, Medicaid Fraud Control Section
- David P. Shallcross, Director of Senior Protection, PA Office of Attorney General
- Amy Federer, Director of Operations, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Philadelphia
Panelists shared insights into the emotional, cognitive, and systemic factors that contribute to self-neglect and discussed the legal and ethical complexities that arise when older adults refuse care. Through real-world case examples and open discussion, attendees examined how collaborative, trauma-informed, and person-centered approaches can improve outcomes for individuals who may be isolated, at risk, or living in unsafe conditions.
The event served as a powerful reminder of the role that agencies and professionals must play in preventing elder abuse in all its forms—including self-neglect—and reinforced PCA’s commitment to advocacy, education, and coordinated care.
