Celebrating ‘Threads of Joy’ in Southwest Philly
Philadelphia Corporation for Aging (PCA) was proud to partner with Mural Arts Philadelphia and HumanGood to celebrate the unveiling of a new mural at the Ann Thomas Presbyterian Senior Apartments in Southwest Philadelphia. The event marked the culmination of a months-long community art project supported by funding from the Pennsylvania Housing Affordability and Rehabilitation Enhancement initiative (PHARE).
About the Project
Led by artist Kelley Prevard, the mural, titled Threads of Joy: Celebrating the Golden Years, was designed to challenge stereotypes about aging. Drawing on ideas gathered during community events, the design depicts older adults dancing, gardening, socializing, and laughing—joyful scenes reflecting the vibrancy of senior life. Residents also participated in an on-site art club to help paint the mural and create other artworks, making the project a true collaboration with the Ann Thomas community.
Dedication Ceremony Highlights
The June celebration brought together residents, staff, community partners, and local leaders to honor the project’s completion. Speakers shared messages about the value of public art, community engagement, and the power of partnerships.
