Celebrating 60 Years of the Older Americans Act

Sarah Greer

On July 14, 1965, the Older Americans Act (OAA) was signed into law — laying the groundwork for the nation’s first system of home and community-based services for older adults. Sixty years later, the OAA remains a vital resource, helping millions of older Americans stay healthy, independent, and connected to their communities.

Here at Philadelphia Corporation for Aging (PCA), we see the impact of the OAA every day. From home-delivered meals and in-home care to transportation, caregiver support, and protective services, the OAA has shaped how we care for and empower older Philadelphians to age in place with dignity.

The OAA created a national framework for supporting older adults. This network includes organizations across the country — like PCA — that help older adults maintain their independence and quality of life as they age. As the population ages, the role of aging services remains essential.

At PCA, we’re proud to recognize this 60-year milestone and remain dedicated to improving the quality of life for older Philadelphians and people with disabilities, helping them achieve their highest level of health, independence, and productivity.
