Mental Health Association of SE PA

Advocates for better services and treatment of people with mental illness and also for children and adolescents with emotional disorders. The Association a United Way agency performs a variety of public and professional educational activities and community service projects in support of this mission. Serves all five counties. The Philadelphia Compeer Project arranges one-on-one matches between adults learning to cope with mental illness who live in Philadelphia with volunteers of the same sex and of similar age who share common interests and live nearby. The two spend at least four hours a month together participating in social and recreational activities. The goal is to promote recovery by providing adults with severe mental illness with friends who can help them overcome fear isolation and loneliness. Mental Health and Aging Advocacy Project is committed to increasing awareness about mental health and aging issues. Staff also assists older adult consumers and their caregivers in accessing and navigating the complex mental health and aging systems. Finally a peer model is used to train older adult consumers to advocate for their rights and a variety of organizing and advocacy initiatives are undertaken to expand mental health and aging services.
