Philadelphia Corporation for Aging’s 2012 M. Powell Lawton Conference on Urban Aging & Award Luncheon will take place on Monday, March 26 from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. at Loews Philadelphia Hotel, 1200 Market Street. This year's conference will address "Aging in Community: Three Models."
Ivonne Gutiérrez Bucher is New AARP State Director

AARP PA has appointed Ivonne Gutiérrez Bucher, RN, MBA-HCA, CCCP as its State Director. She will lead advocacy, community outreach and education work in the state for AARP. Bucher succeeds Dick Chevrefils, who recently retired after serving as state director for four years.
PHMC Seeks Community Sites for LGBT Elders Survey

Public Health Management Corporation is conducting a survey of LGBT seniors to learn about their health status and access to services. Locations are needed where a facilitator can administer the survey onsite.
PCA Expands Financial Exploitation Pilot Project

Philadelphia Corporation for Aging (PCA) has been awarded a $10,000 grant for family safety by the Verizon Foundation. The funding will be used to train professionals in banking, law enforcement, accounting, social services and community organizations to detect and report elder financial exploitation.

To correct information given at the November 9 PCA Winter Resources Conference, households with a child, age 12 or younger, and income between 150 – 250% of the Federal Poverty Level have additional shutoff protection, not age 5.
Social Security Expands Compassionate Allowances

In December, Social Security will add 13 new Compassionate Allowances conditions of the immune system and neurological disorders to the fast-track benefits approval program for serious disabilities. The conditions include certain cancers, adult brain disorders and early-onset Alzheimer’s Disease.
n4a Legislative Update: OAA Funding for FY 2012

The Senate Appropriations Committee approved a draft spending bill for FY 2012 that includes no cuts for Older Americans Act (OAA) programs, and level funding for Supportive Services, Nutrition, National Family Caregiver and other programs. The bill would transfer the State Health Insurance Assistance & Information Program (SHIP) from CMS to AoA; and provide $52 million in funding for next year. Under the Affordable Care Act, Aging & Disability Resource Centers will receive mandatory funding for the first time: $50 million over five years. Unfortunately, AoA’s Caregiver Initiative was given level funding and Adult Protective Services at AoA was not funded. The Alzheimer’s Initiative was cut by 65%. In the House, the bill has not seen the light of day. N4a will continue its advocacy efforts until final FY 2012 funding levels are signed into law.
Governor Tom Corbett Declares State of Emergency

Governor Tom Corbett today declared a statewide disaster emergency to enable state, county and municipal governments to respond effectively to the impact of Hurricane Irene, a massive storm expected to impact much of the eastern half of the state.
Update on LGBT Senior Housing Project

At a special meeting on August 9, the Board of Directors of the William Way LGBT Community Center unanimously voted to withdraw from its partnership with the Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld Fund and Pennrose Properties to build a senior housing unit adjacent to the center. According to Jeffrey C. Sotland, board co-chair, the center’s organizational priorities and immediate need for building renovations cannot be postponed. The Center will continue to support efforts to build LGBT-focused senior housing in Center City and will be a partner in providing services, when the new project is completed.
