Low-income Philadelphia homeowners, age 60 and over, may apply for free repairs and modifications through PCA's Senior Housing Assistance Repair Program (SHARP). The waiting list for SHARP is not long at this time, and applications are encouraged. The program provides minor repairs to improve the safety and security of older Philadelphians' homes. Repairs can include installing or repairing faucets, entry doors and basement steps. In addition, most homes also receive essential safety features, such as railings and smoke alarms. SHARP also completes home modifications for older people with physical disabilities, including adapting bathroom fixtures and installing chair lifts or one step ramps. Home modifications allow the older person to live more independently or accomplish daily tasks more easily. Call the PCA Helpline (215-765-9040). Gross income guidelines for SHARP are $1,276 for one person and $1,711 for two people. An initial assessment is completed by a housing social worker to determine eligibility and the homeowner's needs. If approved, an inspector will explain the repair process, answers questions and schedule work on the home. A consumer can re-apply for SHARP every 5 years.
