‘The Arts,’ Games, a party for centenarians

May is Older Americans Month.

In Philadelphia, that means “Seniors Celebrate the Arts,” Philadelphia Corporation for Aging’s (PCA) month-long celebration of seniors’ artistic achievements; the Philadelphia Senior Games, May 12-16; and the Mayor’s Centenarian Birthday Party, on May 16.

You can see exhibits of seniors’ artwork at Philadelphia Senior Center, at 509 S. Broad St., and the PECO building, at 2301 Market St. A “Seniors Celebrate the Arts” supplement inside this Milestones includes coupons for cultural institutions, listings of arts-related activities, including free performances, and articles about local cultural efforts.

During the five-day Philadelphia Senior Games, older Philadelphians participate in competitions, lessons and demonstrations at various locations.

Philadelphians who are 100 and older this year are invited to the 8th annual Mayor’s Centenarian Birthday Party — a luncheon with entertainment, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., on Friday, May 16, in the Sheet Metal Workers Union Hall at 1301 S. Columbus Blvd. Mayor Nutter will cut a huge “centenarian cake.”
