If you’re a low-income Philadelphia homeowner, 60 or over, you may be eligible for free repairs and modifications through Philadelphia Corporation for Aging’s (PCA) Senior Housing Assistance Repair Program (SHARP).
The waiting list for SHARP is not long at this time, and PCA is encouraging applications.
“Many older adults don’t know this program exists,” said Wayne Lindsey, PCA housing production manager. “These services can help them stay safe and comfortable in their homes.”
The program provides minor repairs to make older Philadelphians’ homes safer and more secure. Repairs may include installing or repairing faucets, entry doors and basement steps. In addition, some homes also receive essential safety features, such as railings and smoke alarms.
For older people with physical disabilities, SHARP may also provide home modifications, including adapting bathroom fixtures and installing railings. Home modifications allow the older person to live more independently or accomplish daily tasks more easily.
“It gives me great pleasure to see the difference we’re making in the lives of seniors and to know we’re helping people,” said Bob Carnation, housing mechanic and inspector.
Monthly gross income guidelines for SHARP are $1,276 for one person and $1,711 for two. A housing social worker visits the home to determine the homeowner’s needs and eligibility. An inspector visits to explain the process, answer questions and schedule work on the home. SHARP work is guaranteed for one year and recipients can re-apply every five years.
