The Emergency Fund
PCA administers the Emergency Fund which was established in 1989 and is guided by a coalition of 20 community-based organizations and service providers.
Last year, the Emergency Fund disbursed a total of $125,215 to 984 households of older adults and disabled persons in crisis situations. Approximately 55% of the emergency aid was disbursed for home heating and utilities; 24% was provided in the form of food assistance; and 21% was directed toward clothing, medical supplies and other general needs. Checks are issued directly to the fuel company, healthcare provider, food store, etc. to assure that the requested goods or services are provided.
More than 100,000 seniors in Philadelphia live at or below 175% of the poverty level. Many of these folks are forced to make some difficult choices - between heating their homes and purchasing groceries and medicine.
To receive assistance, eligible seniors must be referred by recognized social service agencies or the clergy. Organizations that serve older adults and their families may become referral sources; if interested, they may contact: The PCA Helpline at 215-765-9040 for an application. You may view the Emergency Fund brochure here.
Thousands of Philadelphia seniors can’t afford the soaring cost of home heat. The only way they can stay warm this winter is through the Emergency Fund. But we can’t do it alone. We need your help now. And there are many ways you can give it. http://www.keepseniorswarm.org/
