A Look Within: What to Know About MRIs

PECO Offers Free Onsite Energy Education Workshops

PECO’s Energy Education Team offers free workshops at locations throughout Philadelphia to help consumers conserve energy and reduce their energy bills. The January 2011 increase in energy cost will also be discussed, as well as available tools and programs to assist customers with this rate increase. Chubby Checker Promotes New 'Twist' in Medicare

Dancing sensation and rock and roll legend Chubby Checker popularized the “Twist” for millions of Americans in the 1960s. Now he’s helping promote a new kind of “twist” — a change in federal law that makes it easier for seniors and disabled Americans to qualify for extra help with Medicare prescription drug costs. The change takes effect this month.
Philadelphia’s Elderly Compared to Nation

The 2009 Profile of Older Americans report, compiled by the Administration on Aging, shows a growing number of persons age 65+ with greater life expectancy and diversity among the elderly in income, ethnicity, living arrangements and geographic distribution. The proportion of older adults in Philadelphia and the nation is the same – about 13%. However, Philadelphia has a much greater percentage of minority elders, poor elderly, and higher mortality among males.

Journey’s Way Moving to New Facilities

Journey’s Way: Resources and Programs for People 55+ is moving to two new state-of-the-art facilities, designed to serve the community’s elders. The Adult Day Service program for people who need daytime supervision and services will open on Monday, December 21 at 4200 B Mitchell Street on the first floor of the Journey’s Way senior apartment facility, Pensdale II. The Senior Center for active older adults will open on Monday, December 28 at 403 Rector Street. To help equip the Adult Day Service Center, a Housewarming Shower Fundraiser will be held at the new facility on December 16 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Eligible seniors and disabled PA residents have until December 31 to apply for the Property Tax/Rent Rebate program and receive rebates of up to $975 for 2008. An estimated 112,000 people qualify, but have not applied. The program benefits eligible Pennsylvanians age 65 and older; widows and widowers age 50 and older; and people with disabilities age 18 and older. The income limits are $35,000 for homeowners (including half of Social Security) and $15,000 for renters.
